Main Uses for Dried Cherries

Cherries are indeed a delectable fruit. And far beyond being delicious and luscious-looking, they are also versatile. It seems that we can do almost anything with cherries: from desserts and ingredients to our main course to liquid refreshments. On the other hand, however delicious and multipurpose cherries are, we cannot always stock these fresh fruits in our fridge compartment; they easily spoil. That is why many manufacturers have solved this dilemma by preserving cherries: in cans, in jars, among others. But perhaps, the most convenient and popular among these preserved cherry products are the dried cherries.

Uses for Dried CherriesDried cherries, like the fresh fruit, are also appetizing and versatile. Because of their taste, different recipes can be made with this product. Besides, dried cherries are an expedient alternative for the fresh ones since it takes a long time before they spoil on your shelf.

You can easily get a handful and eat them for your snack. Dried cherries can either taste sweet or tangy depending on the type of cherry that was dried – sweet or sour. While directly eating dried cherries can be delightful, it can, however, be a little bit boring.

Do not fret. As mentioned, dried cherries are a very versatile food. There are many dried cherry recipes that you can use to spice up your meal. In fact, many cook books and websites, most especially about desserts, contain humungous amounts of techniques to cook, bake, or prepare food with dried cherries as the primary ingredient.

People from the Crow Nations, an American tribe who used to live in the Yellowstone River, actually used dried cherries to make their native food, the pemmican. Dried cherries, along with other berries, are used in preparing this food especially when there’s a rite or a wedding ceremony.

Today, this product is used to cook a variety of recipes― most usually for desserts or snacks, like muffins, bread pudding, cakes, and cookies. But that’s not all! Thanks to their delicious taste, dried cherries can make your sauces, salads and meat courses especially appetizing!

One famous dried cherry dessert is the chocolate covered cherry. Actually, preparing this is very easy. All you need are your dried cherries (of course) and a small ounce of bittersweet chocolate. Just put the dried cherries in a coating pan with a stand mixer. Spin the mixer slowly. And then, add the chocolate to the spinning cherries using a ladle. Make sure that you add chocolates one ladleful at a time, up until the cherries are coated according to your desired thickness.

More than the taste, appearance, and versatility, dried cherries are also known for their nutritional benefits. It is said that dried cherries are a good source of antioxidants which prevent the negative effects of aging, diarrhea and even cancer.
